Behaviour is communication, we all show behaviours to communicate — including our pets — this is what we all do to survive and to protect ourselves, make choices, stay safe, and adapt to certain situations.
Behaviour in our pets, may gradually occur over time, sometimes starting in puppyhood, which can be mistaken for typical puppy/adolescence behaviours, and progressively worsen as they enter adulthood. In some pets it may appear suddenly, and can be a combination of factors which has suddenly caused a behaviour which may be linked to something medical, genetics, early socialisation, learned associations, anxiety, frustration, conflict, or past experiences.
Many behaviours which are pets express are usually normal behaviours for them, but become problematic or unsafe in a human environment. When they escalate, they can pose a risk to the your pet, other pets in the household, family members, as well as the public, which is why understanding the underlying cause and what is motivating a behaviour is essential for helping your pet feel safe, secure, supported, and able to thrive as well as keeping others safe too!
You may require a behaviour package if your dog is showing any form of reactivity or concerning responses to everyday situations. This can include behaviours such as guarding or protecting resources, reactivity toward dogs, people, or visitors, separation anxiety, charging, lunging, chasing, excessive barking, or destructive behaviour. It also applies to sudden changes in behaviour that seem out of character, such as cowering, hiding, avoidance, fleeing, freezing, or unexpected aggression or reactivity. Unusual repetitive behaviours like shadow chasing, fly catching, or eating inappropriate objects can also indicate an underlying issue.
These signs suggest your dog may be struggling, and a structured behaviour plan can help identify the cause and support them toward feeling safer and more confident.
My behaviour packages follow a structured behaviour modification process:
-beginning with a detailed assessment to help you understand what your pet is doing and why.
During this initial session, I gather information, observe your pet, and build a clear picture of the behaviour we’re addressing.
-Observing communication and body language as well as physical movements - This may include observing walking and body movement and how they adapt to the outside environment
-Training - guiding and showing you the first stage of training or modification and teaching you mechanics and timing which is imporant when training new skills
- Individual Training and Behaviour Modification Plan - a unique, individual plan is created tailored to your dog’s immediate needs, introducing appropriate training and behaviour modification techniques where required. The plans are simple, practical, and easy to follow,
- Ongoing Support - you’ll have my support throughout your package to guide your progress.
- Follow Up Sessions - If you choose a package with follow up sessions, these provide valuable opportunities to refine your training, strengthen your skills, and ensure your timing and handling are spot on.
